Part-time Seasonal Positions

Number of Positions: Ten (10) to Fifteen (15)

Essential Duties: These are seasonal umpire/instructor positions in the Recreation Division of the Provo Parks and Recreation Department. The individuals appointed to these positions will be responsible for umpiring youth Rookie League (T-Ball) and Minor League (Coach Pitch and Machine Pitch) baseball and softball games (ages 5-2nd grade). Additionally, employees will be required to do some field maintenance and perform other related work as required.

Minimum Requirements: Must commit to work May-June. Experience and/or knowledge of rules associated with youth T-Ball and coach/machine pitch baseball/softball games which would demonstrate an ability to officiate while teaching the children how to play the game. Past work in youth baseball and softball is preferred. Candidates must be proactive, energetic, reliable, and have a solid understanding of the rules. Must be comfortable working independently in a large group setting with children, coaches, and spectators.

Selection Factors: Intermediate knowledge of baseball and/or softball rules; conflict resolution, and ability to maintain control of teams, coaches, and players. Please indicate sports knowledge in the certifications section of the application.

Physical/Environmental Factors: This work requires that the individuals stand on their feet for the entire game and deal with the public in potentially stressful circumstances, as well as the ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.

Duration of Position: Approximately May 12, 2018 to June 30, 2018. Training will be May 1, 2018, at 7:00 PM.

Hours: May to June on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM and an occasional weekday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Rainouts are made up on Friday or other weeknight evenings.

Wage: $9.00 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.

Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
