STORY TIME PERFORMER
Children's Division

Part-time Regular Position

Essential Duties: This position is in the Children’s Division of the Provo City Library. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform in front of large groups of people using a head microphone. Audiences range from 50 to 200 people of all ages, including infants, children, adults, etc. The performer must be able to entertain the audience by singing songs, reading or telling short stories, performing dramatic presentations which may include wearing costumes, dancing, using puppets and other ad lib performances. Individual must also be able to perform crowd control techniques, project their voices, and have no fear of theatrical and singing performances. In addition, employee may be required to perform at outreach locations including elementary schools in front of large groups of school children, the library ball room, parks, and other venues as needed. Story time performer will work with the Children’s Program Coordinator in deciding story time plans, themes, costumes, props and materials used. Story time performer will be trained in “Emergent Literacy” concepts which are to be used in every story time performance. Story time performer must be willing to talk to parents following story times to discuss and answer questions on preschool age children and emergent literacy skills. In addition, employee may be required to perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: High school diploma, ability to read, write, and communicate at a high school level, understand children’s developmental stages, and interact with the public, infants, and young children. Previous performance experience and/or experience working with younger children (ages infant to two year olds) is desirable.
Selection Factors: Ability to teach, work with both younger children and adults, use creativity, and effectively interact with and understand materials appropriate for younger children. Ability to improvise with various performance activities.
Wage: $10.00 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.
Hours: Approximately ten (10) hours per week; Tuesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Hours will vary based on department need.
Screening: Based on meeting the minimum requirements and job-related experience, skills, knowledge, and education. Selection may be based largely upon an oral interview. Criminal background checks are conducted on all City positions. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal.
