Community Policing
Sgt. Mark Crosby, Community Oriented Policing
Several years ago, representatives from the Provo Police Department met with a group of citizens from a community neighborhood. During the discussions we learned that the major concerns identified by the citizens include disorderly behaviors or conditions such as abandoned cars, traffic problems, graffiti, party houses, youth gangs and drug houses. We learned that people act on fears, and many were choosing to move out of their neighborhoods.
This realization of the community's concerns about quality of life led the Provo Police Department to develop a partnership with the community to solve this and other neighborhood problems. Thus, a Community Oriented Policing (COP) team was developed. This is not a new concept. In fact, this philosophy was first introduced in England in the 1800's by Sir Robert Peel who stated "The police are the public and the public are the police."
By implementing the COP philosophy, problems will be identified, solutions will be discussed and applied. Quality of life will be enhanced for our Provo Community to remain among the "greatest places to live."
Citizens can help make their community a safer place to live. In our web page, you will find information about:
