Curbside Blue Can Recycling

Provo City's opt-out curbside recycling program is now in full swing. The opt-out period is over, containers have been delivered and every-other-week service is now taking place.

For new residents who have just moved in who would rather not recycle, an opt-out form  can be filled out and sent to Provo City Utilities, 251 W 800 N, Provo UT 84604, or simply contact the Provo City Help Desk at (801) 852-6000. More information, including solid waste collection costs, can be seen by going to Opt-Out Recycling Program  .

Recycling Schedule

Blue recycle cans are emptied every other week on the same day as your black garbage can. Recycle cans are serviced by Allied Waste (also known as Republic Waste). Please have cans out on the curb by 6 a.m. on your week of service.

Please view the curbside recycling map and calendar to see when your week of pickup is scheduled. After the link downloads, scroll down to see the calendar. Separate views can be seen by clicking on map or calendar. If you live near a route border, your day of service may be different that the maps mentioned above, For more detailed information, search for your address in Provo City's Interactive Map for recycling information and more. Once this map is showing, type your address in the box in the top left corner then press enter. Your pickup day will show at the bottom of the box along the left side.

Curbside Etiquette for Trash and Recycling

  • Make sure to have your trash and recycling containers out and ready to be picked up no later than 6 a.m. on your scheduled pick up day.
  • When possible, make sure that containers are spaced approximately 3 feet apart and have at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides, and 10 feet of clearance above.
  • After your container has been dumped, remember to remove it from the street within 24 hours.
  • Overfilled containers may not be picked up.
  • Allied Waste will not pick up recycling containers with trash in them, and will be called in to Provo City for removal.

If you have followed the guidelines for pickup and your container was not emptied, please call the City Helpline at (801) 852-6000 to schedule a go-back. Or, call Republic Services directly at (801) 785-5935. Your missed container should be emptied by 6 p.m. the next business day. Collection days are normally Monday - Thursday, with the exception of July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas for 2012.

Recycling Facts and News You Can Use!

Did you know that much of what you throw away could be recycled? The following items can be deposited in the blue recycling containers for processing into usable products: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, phone books, office paper, plastics #1 - 7 (Look inside the triangle, usually on the bottom of plastic containers, for the #), tin and aluminum cans, torn down corrugated cardboard, cereal and food boxes, paper towel/toilet paper cores. Plastic grocery bags must be tied in a knot or bundled inside another bag. No loose grocery bags please! For a list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please refer to Allied Waste's website at alliedwasteutah.com. These items do not need to be sorted. They can be put directly into the can.

Prevent Identity Theft

Shred anything with your name or confidential information. Rather than dumping loose shredded paper into the blue container, put it in a clear garbage bag tied up. It will be easily identified at the processing facility and put in the paper bin for recycling.

Recycling Do's
  • Do your part and make a difference by recycling everything you can that's recyclable.
  • Emptying and rinsing containers and cans is recommended to keep other recyclable materials from being contaminated.
  • Cut or tear down large cardboard items so they will fit in the recycling bin.
  • Please make sure that all recyclables fit within the recycling bins.
Recycling Dont's
  • Don't separate or sort different types of materials into plastic bags. Just put all the recyclables in the recycling container loose for user and processing convenience. If you recycle metal hangers, please bundle them.
  • Don't bother to remove labels. Also, there is no need to replace the lids on bottles. Just empty and rinse containers and toss them in the blue can.
  • Don't place any items in the containers that are stained or soiled with food material, i.e., pizza boxes, aluminum foil, etc. These items contaminate the other clean materials and reduce commodity value. Waxy cardboard is not accepted.
  • Don't put glass or styrofoam in the blue container. These items are not acceptable at this time.
  • Don't put wood or green waste in blue container. These items are unacceptable materials.
