William Andrew Green
May 28, 1931 - August 22, 2019
William Andrew Green, known to all as Bill, passed away peacefully August 22, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Bill, the oldest child of William Bailey Green and Dorothy King was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the old LDS Hospital, on the 28th of May 1931. Raised in Provo, Orem and Vineyard, Utah, Bill attended Maeser Elementary School, Union Elementary School, and Farrar Middle School. He graduated in 1949, from Lincoln High School, in Orem, Utah, where during his junior and senior years he played football as the tackle, participated in pole vault competitions, and was on the track team. From 1951 to 1953 Bill served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the North Central States Mission. He spent most of his mission in the St. Cloud and Albert Lea areas of Minnesota, but also served in Pierce, South Dakota. Bill loved to study the gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Throughout his life he accepted many callings to serve in the church including serving as the Mission President of the Seventies in the American Fork East Stake, indexing names for the church’s genealogical library in Salt Lake City, serving a Stake Genealogy Library Mission along with his wife Valerie, and teaching the High Priests in the 20th Ward of the American Fork East Stake. Bill always said that he loved teaching the High Priests because of the spiritual strength and understanding of the brethren he taught, and because he learned so much while preparing for each lesson. After his mission, Bill served his country during the Korean war as a member of the Army's 44th Battalion of Engineers. During his military service he spent time at Fort Ord, California, for basic training, Eta Jima, Japan at the military building supervisor training station, and at Inchon, Korea, where he supervised the building of army warehouses. In February 1956, after returning from Korea, Bill married Valerie Anne Finelly in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ Salt Lake Temple. This union was blessed with five children. After his marriage, Bill worked at the Geneva Steel Mill and then for the United States Postal Service while attending Brigham Young University. Bill graduated from Brigham Young University in 1967 with a degree in Sociology. Bill worked for the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation at the Tooele, Utah office, the South Salt Lake District office, the Provo, Utah office, again at the South Salt Lake District Office where he was a Supervising Counselor, and at the Central District, Salt Lake Valley, West office where he was the District Leader. During his professional career, Bill held many prestigious positions and won many awards. In 1996, after twenty-six years of dedicated service, Bill retired. During his retirement years Bill was able to spend time doing the activities he loved such as genealogy, reading, learning new skills, traveling, studying the gospel of Jesus Christ, and most of all spending time with his family and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife Valerie Anne Finelly. He is survived by his five children, William Scott (Peggy) Green, Julie (Kevin) Grover, Lisa (Kevin) Dudley, Steven (Karrie) Green, Valerie Aimee (Todd) Murdock, his twenty-four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and his three sisters Dorothy Clark, Janet Petersen, and Karen (Dennis) Lea. The family would like to thank Dr. Edward Michael Gilbert, Heart Failure; Dr. Roger Freedman, Cardiac Electrophysiology, Pacemakers and Defibrillators; and Dr. Jose Nativi-Nicolau, Heart Failure, Amyloidosis, and their teams at the University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Center, who cared for Bill over the past 25 years. The family is grateful for the extra years of wonderful association and happy memories made possible by the exemplary care provided by these dedicated individuals. The family would also like to thank their friends, the owners and staff of Cocolitos in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Bill's favorite restaurant, for providing the space, time, and food for many family dinners, get-togethers, and long afternoons of reminiscing that not only fed his body but also his soul. Funeral services for William Andrew Green (Bill) will be held at the American Fork 20th Ward, American Fork East Stake Chapel, 825 East 500 North, American Fork Utah, at 11:00 a.m., Friday August 30th, 2019, with a 10:00 a.m. viewing preceding the services. A viewing will also be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 29th, 2019, at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork Utah. Bill will be interred at the Provo City Cemetery.
