Paul Jay Thompson

1950 - 2020

Paul Jay Thompson, 69, of Orem, Utah passed away January 26, 2020 at the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah.  His parents were Earl M Thompson and Irene B Thompson.  He was the youngest of his six siblings, Glenn Bagley (deceased) of St. George, Utah, Bruce Thompson (deceased) of Southern California, Betty Clark of Lindon, Utah, Olivmari Workman of Arroyo Grande, California, Richard Bagley of Provo, Utah and Don Thompson of American Fork, Utah.

He attended school in Lindon and Pleasant Grove, Utah.  He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1968.  He married his first wife, Jill in 1969 and they resided in Provo where they had their only child, Shawn Thompson.  Jill’s family needed her help, so they moved next to her father in American Fork, Utah.  While there Paul worked at the Utah Development Center, back then it was identified as the American Fork Training School.  They later decided to separate and divorce.

Paul met and married his second wife Debbie and they moved to Huntington, Utah and there they had three boys.  He worked in the coal mines and while working there Paul had a serious accident to his spine which required several surgeries in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s.  He became partially disabled and had to leave the mines.  Then he and Debbie moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah where Paul started working again at the State Development Center.  He and Debbie were later divorced.

He met and married Sandy and they made their home in Lindon, Utah and later moved to Chester, Utah and started a horse ranch.  Paul enjoyed raising, selling, buying and trading horses.  As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Paul served in the Chester Ward and became a temple worker at the Manti Temple.  He enjoyed his temple service.  Problems arose between Sandy and Paul and they were later divorced.

Paul then moved to several places in Utah County.  He continued to have more medical problems and so he moved into his son and daughter-in-law, Shawn and Polly’s basement apartment.  There he resided and was helped by them until his passing.  During this time Paul enjoyed serving in his church ward and attending the Provo Temple.

He is survived by his children; Shawn Thompson, Wesley Thompson, Russell Thompson, Justin Thompson, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Provo City Cemetery Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.  All family, friends and acquaintances are welcome.
